🎨 Steve Bishopric and Sue McBurnie
Potter Steve Bishopric and ceramic artist and teacher Sue McBurnie developed their creative work at Nob Creek Pottery in Byfield. The studio combines functional pottery with wood-fired and pit-fired pieces, while the surrounding forest supplies recurring subjects, including the distinctive Byfield fern. Their galleries have also presented work by other makers. The local connection is a working studio embedded in the Byfield landscape, where visitors encounter both finished pieces and the processes behind them. It is a contribution to the district’s cultural life through sustained making and teaching.
📚 Julian Tenison Woods
Priest and naturalist Julian Tenison Woods visited the Capricorn Coast during the 1870s and 1880s and studied local plants around Emu Park. The Haven’s history records that botanical work, commemorated there by the Tenison Woods Memorial Garden. His better-known religious work included co-founding the Sisters of St Joseph with Mary MacKillop, but the Emu Park association is also scientific fieldwork. The garden makes that less familiar part of his career visible through plants, connecting a named person with observations made in the district rather than relying only on his religious reputation.
🚤 Tom McLean
Tom McLean attended Cawarral State School for four years, the whole of his formal education. His family moved frequently, and by sixteen he was running his father’s store at Dululu on his own. Farming and hotel work followed before he developed a substantial tourism business from Mackay. He acquired former naval launches for cruises and, with his family, expanded Roylen Cruises and the facilities on Brampton Island. The Cawarral school years were a modest beginning for an energetic commercial life. His later achievements grew through practical work, boating experience and persistent involvement in the opportunities of coastal Queensland tourism.
